You can use a few things.

One would be egg tempera (the old masters used it), I can't remember the exact 'recipe' or method but it can give a really nice finish and ground to paint on. You can also mix in raw pigment, in powder form, that allows you to work on a coloured or white ground.

Second would be acrylic primer, which is also quite good. Similarly you could use lead primer, but acrylic is preferred as its non toxic.

The primer that you teacher used could possibly be rabbit skin glue. This is a very traditional method, used on canvas as well. You buy the crystals and heat them up in a double boiler with a bit of water (I think the ratio is 1:14water but look it up). You then would prime the front AND BACK of the board.

Sorry I can't give more detail but hopefully you've got something to look up!
hi, yeah gesso is good, also anything that will soak in and harden like,

polyurethane. i would use a water base so you don't breath in too many vapors, plus it will dry quicker.

yeah....gesso the first respondent was right on. be warm and well, jb
