What can I do to stop Oil spills occurring in our oceans.?

I want to know if there is something me as an individual, that i can do to stop Oil pollution . Most website just want me to join or donate but i what to go out there and actually do something. What can I do to stop Oil spills occurring in our oceans.?
First we must stipulate the difference between man-made oil spills and oil spills that occur naturally. There are in fact numerous places on the ocean floor where crude oil seeps out of the sea bed, naturally. In fact, the oil companies use satellite imagery to locate small slicks on the surface and this gives them location parameters to explore.

What you mean, of course, are man-made oil spills.

Oil that has been spilled on the ocean generally comes from 2 sources:

1. Oil used by the ship (for fuel) is released via contaminated bilge water (ships often do this at night so nobody can see the slick).

2. Accidents where the ship's hull has been ruptured and the ship's load of fuel (for its own engines or being transported) escapes.

Most oil tankers today are double hulled to prevent the massive release we've seen in the past, and I believe it is now an enforceable IMO requirement.

However, as long as we need petroleum to run our cars and to make our plastics, we will need to transport large amounts of oil on our oceans. As to what you can do as an individual, try supporting groups that are working towards eliminating our dependency on oil.

But be a bit careful. For example, Brazill has around 160 Ethanol plants, which make EtOH fuel from sugar cane and corn. Thus, over 85% of all cars in Brazill run off 100% Ethanol. However, the demand for Ethanol has grown so strong that huge sections of the Amazon are being torn down (at a rate of 2 football fields per day) to grow the crops needed to make the Ethanol. Obviously, 'green' fuel like Ethanol, is not actually that 'green'.

Also, please be aware that probably only 5% of the oil spill events involve spills in maritime environments. The vast majority of oil which reaches our environment are land-based spills. And a lot of these spills are preventable.

Perhaps a shift in focus from ocean spills to land spills could be the best way forward. What can I do to stop Oil spills occurring in our oceans.?
