What could cause low oil pressure/stop engine on my 1995 cadillac deville?

It only does this when it`s at idle in gear.Have an oil change every 3000 miles. could it be the oil pump? Please helpWhat could cause low oil pressure/stop engine on my 1995 cadillac deville?
I own a shop, and think this; You may just have a bad sending unit. Since the oil pressure switch works both the oil pressure gage as well as the fuel pump safety circuit, it can cause this condition. Replace the sending unit, and clean out the hole the sender screws into, to make sure its not plugged up enough to cause this. It could in fact be a bad oil pump not keeping the pressure up, or the engine bearings have worn so thin that the pressure is escaping by them, and not keeping the engine pressure up enough at idle speed. Too thick of oil may do this, or too thin of oil if the engine has a lot of miles on it. I would have the pressure tested at the port where the sender installs, and if its low, then you must find out why. Being low on oil will also do this.

Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!What could cause low oil pressure/stop engine on my 1995 cadillac deville?
Low oil pressure even if its full of oil, could be a weak oil pump

Which on this old of car is normal.
could be the guage hook a mechanical gauge directly to the sender. I had a new autometer electric gauge on my truck and found that the gauge was off 15 pounds. Check the motor when cold if the pressure drops after its warmed up its probably a bearing problem. I dont think thats to uncommon for a older motor to lose a little pressure. Just make a note of what your old gauge is reading both warm and cold at idle before you unhook from the sender and compare to the mechanical gauge.
Low engine idle can cause this problem. If the light goes off when in neutral or when the gas pedal is pushed have the idle speed checked.
